ProWiki was developed with the needs of the WikiProvider in mind. This was because WikiService was one of the first WikiProviders and the most successful in the German countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).

The basic needs of the WikiProvider are:

• it must be simple to host dozens or hundreds of wikis
• hosting should be efficient in space, time and performance
• it must be easy to meet the various customer needs
• there must be functions to handle various groups and clusters of wikis
• the overall system should be easy to maintain and develop
